What is the average salary of a CA in India?

Chartered accountants (CAs) were offered an average salary of aroundRs. 7.36 lakh a year in the latest campus placement programme conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). The highest pay range reached Rs. 24.64 lakh a year.

How many years is the course of CA?

Generally people consider only 3 years of articleship period as a complete tenure for CA course but before that a 1 year study for the first two levels is also required which makes a total of 4 years for completing CA course.

What are the steps to be followed to become a Chartered Accountant?

Step 1: Enroll with the CA Institute for Common Proficiency Test after passing Class 10 examination

Step 2: Write HSC exam and then appear for CPT exams – after a period of 60 days of registration

Step 3: Join Professional Competence Course

Step 4: After passing CPT, undergo 100 Hrs of Information Technology Training

Step 5: Work as an articled assistant or audit assistant for 18 months and then appear in Professional Competence Examination (PCE)

Step 6: After passing PCE register for Final course and complete articled training of 3 1/2 years. May undergo General Management and Communication Skills Course during last 12 months of articled training while undergoing Final course.

Step 7: Appear for the final exams

What is the CPT exam?

The CPT or Common Proficiency Test was the entry level of Chartered Accountancy examinations in India. which has been changed to CA Foundation according to ICAI revised scheme.

What are the subjects covered in CPT?

CPT is a test of four subjects :

  • Accounting 
  • Mercantile Laws 
  • General Economics  
  • Quantitative Aptitude 

This test is of 200 marks.

Is it compulsory to have maths for CA?

You just need to pass the CPT exam which has one of its subject which is maths. From there onwards, you don't have to know maths in detail. There is no mention of mathematics as a compulsory subject. Students who haven't had mathematics subject are also eligible to do CA.



After clearing CPT what should be next step to clear next level (IPCC)?



The next step after clearing the CPT exam is to take the Intermediate Professional Competence Course (IPCC) Examination.



Go for IPCC registration. One is eligible for the IPCE/IPCC after nine months after the passing of CPT.



Passing Criteria : To pass the IPCC exam, a minimum of 40% marks in each subject, and an aggregate of 50% in each group is required.

How to become a CA after completing +2?

Aspirants have to pass 10+2 and then pursue foundation, intermediate and final CA course for becoming a Chartered Accountant. Every stage has to be passed with a minimum of 50 per cent marks.

The basic eligibility for becoming a Chartered accountant is a pass in 10+2 from a recognised board.

Application Procedure for CA

Aspirants seeking to become a Chartered Accountant should register with the Board of Studies at the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) for the Common Proficiency Test (CPT). The registration has to be done 60 days prior to appearing for the exam. Candidates can enrol for CPT after passing the class 10 exam itself.

On passing the +2 examination or a recognised equivalent examination, candidates can write the CPT.

On successful completion of the +2 exam and the CPT, candidates are eligible to register for the Integrated Professional Competence Course (IPCC). Candidates have the option of choosing Group I and/or Group II. 

A nine month of course study is required. The orientation course is for one week with thirty five hour credit. It covers areas like office procedure, personality development, general commercial knowledge, communication skills, business environment etc. 

After the orientation course, candidates have to gain competence in information technology. Hundred hours of Information Technology Training (ITT) has to be completed by the candidate, followed by articleship training.

On completing the nine month foundation course study, candidates are required to appear for the Group I and/or Group II examinations. Group I has four papers while Group II has three papers. This is the Integrated Professional Competence test commonly known as the intermediate examination. 

Graduates with 50 per cent marks in subjects (Auditing and Commercial, Accounting, or Mercantile Law) and graduates in other disciplines with 55 per cent marks can directly register for the IPPC course without appearing for the foundation course.

On passing both the groups or Group I alone of Integrated Professional Competence Examination (IPCE), candidates can register as Articled Assistant for a three year period.

Candidates can join the CA final course while serving as Articled Assistant. During the last 12 months of articled training, candidates will have to undergo a 15 day course on General Management and Communication Skills (GMCS).GMCS can also be done after taking the final examination.

Aspirants can take the final examination on completion of the three year articled training or while serving the last six months of the training.

On acquiring the ICAI membership, candidates will be designated as Chartered Accountant.
